The War & Treaty’s Michael Trotter Jr. + Lindsay Lou Join Billy Strings At WinterWonderGrass Tahoe

Billy Strings headlined WinterWonderGrass at the Palisades Tahoe resort in Olympic Valley, California on Friday. The guitarist and his band welcomed The War and Treaty’s Michael Trotter Jr. as well as singer-songwriter Lindsay Lou over the course of two sets.

Billy and company — mandolinist Jarrod Walker, bassist Royal Masat and banjo player Billy Failing — fittingly opened their appearance at the winter-centric festival with the Gordon Lightfoot-penned, Tony Rice-recorded “Cold on The Shoulder.” Next came “Red Daisy” from Billy’s Grammy-nominated 2021 album Renewal. Strings is set to perform at the Grammys on Sunday. The first set also contained pairings of “Away From The Mire” and “Long Forgotten Dream” as well as Stanley Brothers’ “Ralph’s Banjo Special” and original “Must Be Seven.”

Following “Love & Regret,” Billy welcomed collaborator, fellow Michigander and WWG Tahoe performer Lindsay Lou for Bill Monroe’s “You Won’t Be Satisfied That Way,” Renewal’s “Nothing’s Working” (a song Billy co-wrote with Lindsay) and the Doc Watson version of “Streamline Cannonball.” Strings and company would go it alone for “Hide & Seek” to seal the first set.

Set two got going with a three-song segment of “Fire Line,” “Running The Route” and Frank Wakefield’s “End Of The Rainbow.” Billy then welcomed Michael Trotter of WWG Tahoe performers The War and Treaty to sing the Gershwin standard “Summertime.” The quartet then coupled The Dillards’ “Old Man At The Mill” with John Hartford’s “All Fall Down.” Strings bookend the second frame with “Fire Line,” which emerged from “Reuben’s Train.” Arlie Duff’s “Y’all Come” served as the encore.
