Father John Misty celebrated the release of his new album, Chloë and The Next 20th Century, with a concert at the Barbican in London on Thursday. The singer-songwriter also known as Josh Tillman performed every track from the LP, which arrived today, with the Britten Sinfonia including eight debuts.
Father John Misty and the Britten Sinfonia conducted by Jules Buckley got things underway with a track, “Funtimes In Babylon,” off Tillman’s debut album under the Misty moniker Fear Fun. FJM then offered the debut of Chloë and The Next 20th Century namesake “Chloë” ahead of the album’s “Goodbye Mr. Blue.” Next, Misty fronted the orchestra on the favorite “Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins)” from his landmark 2015 LP I Love You, Honeybear before delivering debuts of The 20th Century’s “Kiss Me (I Loved You)” and “(Everything But) Her Love.”
Misty then turned to material from his 2018 LP, God’s Favorite Customer, with “Mr. Tillman” and “Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All” ahead of returning to The Next 20th Century with the unveiling of “Buddy’s Rendezvous” followed by “Q4.” The first Pure Comedy (2017) number of the evening came in the form of “Toal Entertainment Forever” ahead of more 20th Century debuts “Olvidado (Otro Momento)” and “Only A Fool” split by the record’s lead single “Funny Girl.” The last quarter of the main set Misty filled with title tracks beginning with “God’s Favorite Customer” and “Pure Comedy” followed by the debut of “We Could Be Strangers” and “The 20th Century.” FJM closed out the main set with “I Love You, Honeybear.”
Tillman returned to his Father John Misty debut for most of the three-song first encore beginning with the Fear Fun favorite “Nancy From Now On” and closing with “Holy Shit.” Pure Comedy’s “Things It Would Have Been Helpful to Know Before the Revolution” feel in between. FJM returned for a final encore of “Date Night.”
