The Grateful Dead shared video of “One More Saturday Night” as this week’s installment in the All The Years Live series. The footage comes from GD’s concert on May 5, 1991 at the Bay Area’s Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California.
The Grateful Dead debuted “One More Saturday Night” at their 1971 fall tour kickoff in Minneapolis on October 19 in a show that included a bevy of debuts that would become Dead classics including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues” and “Ramble On Rose.” In another first, the Fall ‘71 Minneapolis play was also keyboardist Keith Godchaux’s GD debut as a full-time member.
“One More Saturday Night” would later appear on guitarist Bob Weir’s 1972 debut solo album Ace — Bobby recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of Ace in NYC on April 2 and 3 — which while not an official GD album, featured most of the band. “Saturday Night” was one of GD’s most consistently played songs, as archivist David Lemieux points out in his notes accompanying the ‘91 Shoreline version:
Played 340 times by the Grateful Dead, consistently from 1971 to 1995, this was one of the Dead’s most-played originals that was never recorded on a Dead studio record. The two definitive versions appeared on Bob’s Ace album from 1972, and on the Dead’s live Europe ’72 that same year.
