Aerosmith Cancels Las Vegas Residency Dates As Steven Tyler Seeks Treatment For Addiction

52

Aerosmith canceled the first leg of its Deuces Are Wild Las Vegas residency after frontman Steven Tyler voluntarily checked himself into a drug treatment program following a recent relapse. The classic rock act is set to resume touring in early September.

“As many of you know, our beloved brother Steven has worked on his sobriety for many years,” the band wrote in a statement on Tuesday. “After foot surgery to prepare for the stage and the necessity of pain management during the process, he has recently relapsed and voluntarily entered a treatment program to concentrate on his health and recovery.”

Tyler’s health issues stretch back decades, including a motorcycle crash in 1980 that left him hospitalized for two months. In April 1998, the band was forced to postpone a number of dates after the singer injured his knee on a microphone stand at a show. Then in August 2009, Aerosmith canceled its entire summer tour after Tyler fell offstage while performing in Sturgis, SD, suffering a broken shoulder and receiving 20 stitches in the back of his head. It was shortly after this injury that Tyler entered a drug rehabilitation program in December of that year.

The band will now return to the stage on September 4th in Bangor, ME ahead of a hometown show at Fenway Park in Boston, MA on the 8th. After that, Aerosmith will head to Las Vegas for the second leg of the Dueces Are Wild residency at Dolby Live at Park MGM through December 11th.

“We are devastated that we have inconvenienced so many of you, especially our most loyal fans who often travel great distances to experience our shows,” the band concluded. “Thank you for your understanding and for your support for Steven during this time.”

Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry‘s history of drug use is well documented, with the pair earning the nickname “Toxic Twins” for their infamous intake of substances. The mid-1980s, however, saw the band mount a comeback thanks to their sobriety and a collaboration with Run D.M.C. on a remix of “Walk This Way”. Aerosmith’s good health has since carried it to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Super Bowl Halftime Show, its own Guitar Hero video game, and beyond.
