Arcade Fire performed “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid)” and “The Lightning I, II” on last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live. Both songs appear on WE, a studio album released by the band the previous day. Additionally, Arcade Fire played WE’s “End Of The Empire I-IV (Sagittarius A*)” over the end credits.
“Eddie, I love you,” Arcade Fire frontman Win Butler said in shouting out his son with Régine Chassagne before the band lit into “Unconditional I (Lookout Kid).” Last night marked the group’s fifth turn as musical guest on Saturday Night Live after making their debut in 2007 and returning in 2010, 2013 and 2018. Arcade Fire will embark on an extensive tour this fall in support of WE, their first studio album since 2017’s Everything Now.
Benedict Cumberbatch hosted last night’s Saturday Night Live episode. Butler took a moment towards the end of “The Lightning I, II” to declare, “A woman’s right to choose forever and ever and ever. Amen.” The statement seemingly came in support of reproductive freedom in the wake of a draft that leaked last week noting the Supreme Court voted to overturn abortion rights.
