Lettuce “Keep That Funk Alive” with legendary bassist Bootsy Collins. The track is the third single from the funk stalwarts’ upcoming studio album, Unify.
Unify arrives two weeks from today on June 3 and is currently available for pre-order. Lettuce self-produced the follow-up to 2019’s Elevate and 2020’s Resonate, which like those albums was tracked at Denver’s Colorado Sound Studios with engineer Jesse O’Brien.
Lettuce — consisting of drummer Adam Deitch, saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, guitarist Adam ‘Shmeeans’ Smirnoff, trumpeter Eric “Benny” Bloom, bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes and keyboardist Nigel Hall — came together at Colorado Sound Studios after a long time apart due to the pandemic. “Dealing with the pandemic, being in separate places, trying to survive without our best friends, without touring, not to mention the political divide in this country,” said Deitch. “We really needed to unify.” The band previously shared Unify tracks “Gravy Train” and “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright.”
Bootsy lent his talents to “Keep That Funk Alive,” which was birthed from a caption in one of the bassist’s Instagram posts that Adam Deitch saw early on in the pandemic before the band met Collins. “Linking up organically with one of the inventors of funk music, eternally iconic bassist and vocalist Bootsy Collins, still feels like a dream,” noted Deitch. “Bootsy wants to keep the Funk alive…and we wholeheartedly agree with that statement. Major props to Bootzilla for believing in us!”
