moe. Returns At Summer Camp Music Festival

64

moe. returned to the stage under their own name for the first time since December at the Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, Illinois on Friday and Saturday. Keyboardist Nate Wilson and guitarist Suke Cerulo replaced Chuck Garvey, who is recovering from a stroke suffered last November.

The group previously played with Chuck last Halloween and then performed a pair of concerts at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on December 10 and 11 sans Garvey featuring a number of special guests. Additionally, moe. took the stage with Wilson and Cerulo as Monkeys On Ecstacy in Albany earlier this month.

moe.’s first Summer Camp set of 2022 came on Friday. Wilson, Cerulo, bassist Rob Derhak, guitarist Al Schnier, drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin kicked off the afternoon set on the Moonshine Stage with “Not Coming Down.” The sextet jammed “NCD” into “Wormwood,” which bled into “Okayalright.” Next came more recent fare in “Jazz Cigarette” and “Crushing.” The latter gave way to “Timmy Tucker” and was followed by “Mar-DeMa.” The band closed out the frame by working “Captain America” into “Recreational Chemistry.”

Additionally, members of moe. played late night on the Campfire Stage Friday as Bluestar Radiation. While the group’s usual guitarist, Tim Palmieri, didn’t perform as he was under the weather, Schnier, Derhak, Amico, Wilson and Laughlin moved forward with the set. Special guests included Umphrey’s McGee guitarist, Brendan Bayliss, who lent a hand on Supertramp’s “Bloody Well Right,” Ghost Of Jupiter’s “Yellow Tiger” and Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days.”

Saturday’s first of two Moonshine Stage sets began with a pairing of “Happy Hour Hero” and “Seat Of My Pants.” moe. then saluted their hometown with “Skitchin’ Buffalo” ahead of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed,” an Allman Brothers Band cover last played on June 1, 2019. The six musicians wrapped the set with a massive seamless run featuring “Big World,” “Ricky Marten,” “Time Ed” and “George.”

Derhak led “Blue Jeans Pizza” to get last night’s second set underway. “ATL” emerged out of the opener and was followed by “Downward Dog.” Next came a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” and a “Rebubula” featuring “So Long” and “Buster” within. For the encore, moe. treated fans to “Mob Rules” by Black Sabbath and their own “Tailspin.” The band will perform again at Summer Camp later today, Sunday, May 29.
