JamBase partner Osiris Media‘s Phish podcast Undermine released the third season finale today around the band’s historic 2017 Baker’s Dozen run at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The episode titled “Hoist The Banner” discused the legacy and history of the BD and how it has informed Phish shows moving forward.
“Hoist The Banner” refers to the banner that ascended to the rafters of Madison Square Garden at the end of the Baker’s Dozen cementing the monumental run in MSG’s storied history. The episode begins with guests talking about the unique experience that was the Baker’s Dozen, for fans, the band and crew alike.
Host and Phish lyricist Tom Marshall then gave a brief recap of the BD-centric season of Undermine documenting the landmark 13-night run with 237 songs played and no repeats as well as the 13 corresponding donut flavors that acted as themes for each individual show but also how BD was a singular experience.
“For those with perfect attendance, all 13 shows comprised one singular experience,” Marshall noted. “Phish had masterfully designed their setlist so if you attended just one night, you still got a complete show with bust outs, hits, curiosities and catharsis and you went home happy. But if you attended all 13, well, you went home a changed person. And an exhausted one at that.”
Tom then touched on the final weekend of the BD and its corresponding donut flavors as well as how Phish tied the whole run together with the “Is this still ‘Lawn Boy?’” inside joke referenced by keyboardist Page McConnell during the final show. Marshall then moved on to life beyond the Baker’s Dozen, which included their annual run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Colorado as well as their return to MSG for New Year’s to cap off 17 concerts at the “The World’s Most Famous Arena” in 2017.
The podcast then featured some insights from Dave “Mr. Miner” Calarco on how the Baker’s Dozen has influenced Phish shows moving forward as well as how past shows, especially from 2012, influenced the BD itself. The podcast also welcomes more guests, who look back and forward, at how BD was a watershed moment for Phish in terms of jamming, setlist construction and more.
