Trey Anastasio Band Debuts ‘Hey Stranger’ In Boston

The Trey Anastasio Band offered the live premiere of Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio‘s “Hey Stranger” into the setlist for their Saturday night concert at Roadrunner in Boston. “Hey Stranger” appears on Trey’s recently released debut solo acoustic album, Mercy.

Anastasio and the latest TAB iteration in which he’s joined by bassist Dezron Douglas, drummer Russ Lawton, percussionist Cyro Baptista, keyboardist Ray Paczkowski, trumpeter Jennifer Hartswick, trombonist Natalie Cressman and saxophonist James Casey opened their first of two shows at the new Boston venue with “Alive Again.” The band then went with “Set Your Soul Free” after which Trey welcomed the audience and mentioned, “This place is cool. I like it … I approve!”

The reggae-tinged “Love Is What We Are” followed along with the Page McConnell-penned instrumental “Magilla.” From there, TAB fit instrumental “Olivia” in between performances of Phish classics “Ocelot” and “Camel Walk.” Last night’s first set concluded with the gorgeous “Drifting,” a funky “The Moma Dance” and nicely extended “Night Speaks To A Woman.”

Last night’s second set began with the first “Speak To Me” played in front of a live audience since August 13, 2019. TAB then took “Everything’s Right” deep for nearly 20 minutes and followed with live staple “Gotta Jibboo.” Next, Anastasio led the group on the first live “Hey Stranger.” The song was filled out with a full arrangement as opposed to the stripped-down solo version featured on Mercy. “That’s a little pandemic ditty, that’s the first time we ever played it and we just learned it in soundcheck. So there you go,” Anastasio explained.

The closing stanza rolled on with “Liquid Time,” a short but sweet “Ghost” and “Mozambique” showcasing the members of the horn section. Dezron Douglas stepped into the spotlight with a bass solo during the “Ether Sunday” that followed. A pairing of “Rise/Come Together” and “Sand” ended the frame. Anastasio returned to kick off the encore with solo acoustic versions of “Theme From The Bottom,” “More” and “Chalk Dust Torture.” The latter included a bit of “Harry Hood” within. The rest of the band then reemerged to say farewell with “Push On ‘Til The Day.”
