Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Pink Floyd Cover With Kanika Moore At SweetWater 420 Fest

45

Doom Flamingo vocalist Kanika Moore was Umphrey’s McGee‘s special guest at the SweetWater 420 Fest in Atlanta on Saturday. Moore led a Jake Cinninger-less UM through their first cover of Pink Floyd’s “Have A Cigar” in nearly three years during the band’s second set on Saturday in Centennial Olympic Park.

Bassist Ryan Stasik‘s Doom Flamingo bandmate previously fronted Umphrey’s McGee on their two past “Have A Cigar” covers on June 21, 2019 at Red Rocks near Denver and then again in Indianapolis on August 24, 2019. Saturday’s performance of the Roger Waters-penned gem ended a 142-show gap between UM takes on the song from Wish You Were Here.

Cinninger missed Umphrey’s McGee’s concerts in Atlanta over the weekend to take “some necessary time to work on his health and well-being.” While the band moved forward as a quintet for the bulk of their performances, they were joined by members of The String Cheese Incident, TAUK and Empire Strikes Brass on Thursday and TAUK’s Isaac Teel and Doom Flamingo’s Ross Bogan on Friday.

Guitarist Brendan Bayliss had the crowd cheer its support for Cinninger following Moore’s guest spot on Saturday. “Make it loud,” Brendan told the audience. The five-piece then worked “Hajimemashite” within “Puppet String” to end their second set. Saturday’s first frame began with a lengthy run featuring “August,” “Half Delayed,” “Der Bluten Kat” and “Wellwishers.” Bayliss then quipped, “Where were we?” before UM concluded “Der Bluten Kat” and asked fans to make noise for “our brother Jake.” The group went on to close the set with oldie “2nd Self.”

Umphrey’s opened the second set with recent single “I Don’t Know What I Want” and took “Wappy Sprayberry” deep. The group then led into the Kanika Moore collaboration by performing the gorgeous instrumental “Den.”
