Watch Mavis Staples & Levon Helm Perform ‘This May Be The Last Time’

31

Video of Mavis Staples and Levon Helm performing The Staple Singers-recorded “This May Be The Last Time” is the latest offering from Carry Me Home. The highly anticipated live album captured in the Summer of 2011 is due out on Friday, May 20 via ANTI- Records.

ANTI- announced Carry Me Home in March. The live record features highlights captured during a series of concerts conducted by legendary artists Levon Helm and Mavis Staples at Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, New York in Summer 2011. ANTI- previously previewed the record with videos of the friends and collaborators on the Rolling Stones-recorded blues standard “You Got To Move” and the Nina Simone-recorded “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free.”

Captured less than a year before Levon’s death, Carry Me Home contains some of Helm’s final recordings and his last with dear friend and collaborator Mavis Staples.

“It never crossed my mind that it might be the last time we’d see each other,” Mavis said of the 2011 collaboration. “He was so full of life and so happy that week. He was the same old Levon I’d always known, just a beautiful spirit inside and out.”

The poignantly prophetic gospel song, “This May Be The Last Time,” recorded by The Staple Singers in 1960, is a fitting final preview of Carry Me Home, which arrives tomorrow. The video appears to be of a rehearsal of the song and sees Mavis Staples, Yvonne Staples, Levon Helm and more performing “This May Be The Last Time.” Watch it below:

Mavis Staples and Levon’s daughter singer-songwriter Amy Helm will celebrate Carry Me Home’s release on May 20 with a concert in New York City. Check out Mavis’ tour dates:
