Lucius welcomed Roger Waters to guest during their Wednesday night concert at The Beacon Theatre. Waters played acoustic guitar and sang the Pink Floyd classic “Mother” at the New York City venue.
Lucius’ Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe were members of the Pink Floyd co-founder’s touring band for 157-date Us + Them Tour in 2017 and 2018. Waters recruited the pair as backing vocalists for the trek after Holly and Jess were part of his ensemble for a 2015 appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. Roger was also joined by My Morning Jacket and guitarist G.E. Smith for the set at Fort Adams State Park on July 24, 2015.
Celisse opened for Lucius tonight at The Beacon Theatre. The guitarist/vocalist went on to join Laessig, Wolfe and company for “Dance Around It” towards the end of their main set in New York City. Celisse had previously augmented Lucius and Sheryl Crow on the Second Nature track on Tuesday’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Phish frontman Trey Anastasio was on hand at The Beacon to watch his Ghosts Of The Forest bandmate.

At the beginning of the encore, Wolfe told the crowd about the “crazy adventure” they went on touring with Roger Waters. “He really supported us as women and wanted us to shine, being us beside him and his project,” Jess said before adding, “We got to sing Pink Floyd songs all over the world and somehow he manages to keep showing up and being supportive and loving to us. He lives in New York, so we’d like to welcome Roger Waters.”
Waters emerged and had some issues with his mic stand. Wolfe tried to help and after struggling quipped, “Well, I just got fired.” Roger handled the majority of the vocals on the track from 1979’s The Wall while Jess and Holly harmonized on the “mama’s” and “ooh babe” verses in the song. The three musicians presented a stripped-down arrangement in which they were augmented by Peter Lalish on electric guitar.
Roger’s cameo was his first public performance in front of a live audience since the pandemic began. “I know we can remember the song, but I’m just going to try to remember how to play the guitar,” Waters joked. “I’m not going to back out, because it would be inappropriate. But it’s so lovely to be up on stage with Jess and Holly.”
Waters’ This Is Not A Drill North American Tour begins on July 6 in Pittsburgh.
Lucius went on to perform Wildewoman standouts “Two Of Us On The Run” and “Turn It Around” before ending the concert with a cover of Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love.” See fan-shot video footage of Roger Waters and Lucius’ “Mother” below:
