Widespread Panic Mixes ‘Driving Song’ & ‘Surprise Valley’ In Huntsville

87

Widespread Panic headed back to Huntsville, Alabama’s Orion Amphitheater on Saturday for their second of three concerts at the new venue. The sextet moved between “Driving Song” and “Surprise Valley” during a second set that began with an emotional cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” one night after busting out Neil Young’s “Rockin’ In The Free World.”

Panic paired “Tall Boy” and “Henry Parsons Died” to start Saturday’s first set. “Wondering” and “Ribs & Whiskey” kept the focus on classics before a trip through the “Old Neighborhood.” From there, WSP offered staple “Imitation Leather Shoes” and worked “Rebirtha” into a jam on Black Sabbath’s Born Again gem “Zero The Hero.” The Sabbath interlude gave way to the tender “I’m Not Alone” before the six-piece wrapped the frame with “All Time Low.”

“For What It’s Worth” was the first song ever played by Widespread Panic. The tune begins with the timely lyrics:

“There’s something happening here
What it is ain’t exactly clear
There’s a man with a gun over there
Tellin’ me I got to beware

“I think it’s time we stop!
Children, what’s that sound?
Everybody look what’s goin’ down”

“Stop-Go” came next and melted into another dose of Neil Young in “Walk On” via “Turn On Your Lovelight” teases. Panic then worked “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” into an intense jam that eventually faded into “Driving Song.” The six-piece fit “Surprise Valley” and “Drums” between “Driving Song” segments and wrapped up “Surprise Valley” after finishing “Driving Song.” A cover of “Honky Red” and fan favorites “Pilgrims” and “Postcard” brought the +90-minute set to its conclusion.

Widespread Panic came back out for a three-song encore. Up first was Willie Dixon’s “Tail Dragger.” Next was the new original “Halloween Face” before the band said farewell with a rousing cover of NRBQ’s “Flat Foot Flewzy.” Widespread Panic concludes their first visit to the Orion Amphitheater tonight, Sunday, May 29.
