Dave Matthews Band was joined by members of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band for the back end of their set at the Something In The Water festival. The Pres Hall horns added to DMB’s performances of five songs at Independence Avenue in Washington D.C. on Sunday evening.
The three-day festival hosted, headlined and organized by Pharrell Williams was held in Washington D.C. this past weekend after the first and only other installment took place in Pharrell’s hometown of Virginia Beach back in 2019. Dave Matthews Band played a 75-minute set on the “Moon Stage” yesterday.
Dave Matthews and company tipped their hat to the name of the festival by opening with “Don’t Drink The Water.” The septet then looked to their latest studio album, 2018’s Come Tomorrow, for “When The World Ends” before serving up a horn-driven cover of the Peter Gabriel classic “Sledgehammer” and performing fairly new original “Madman’s Eyes.”
Preservation Hall Jazz Band members led by sousaphonist Ben Jaffe and including trumpeter Branden Lewis, saxophonist Clint Maedgen and trombonist Ronell Johnson emerged after “Madman’s Eyes” for the ensuing “That Girl Is You.” Musicians from the New Orleans-based ensemble are no strangers to DMB as they sat-in with the group three times a piece in 2018 and 2019.
The horns went on to contribute to Come Tomorrow track “Can’t Stop” and oldie “What Would You Say.” Additionally, Pres Hall teamed with DMB drummer Carter Beauford, saxophonist Jeff Coffin and trumpeter Rashawn Ross for the “Joe Avery’s Blues” that served as an intro to Sunday’s “Ants Marching” finale.
