Dead & Company Kicks Off Colorado Run At Folsom Field

49

Dead & Company returned to Folsom Field in Boulder on Friday night to kick off a two-night Colorado run. Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart along with John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge and Jeff Chimenti delivered a show that saw the sextet leaning heavily on their bluesy side with a good dose of psychedelia in the second set.

Folsom Field first hosted the band in 2016 and the group came back for additional two-night stands each summer through 2019. D&C got things at Folsom underway with the classic opener “Bertha,” led by guitarist John Mayer on lead vocals who also delivered some twangy soloing before the band headed into the Grateful Dead-covered “Good Lovin’” which saw guitarist Bob Weir taking the reins with a spirited vocal performance. Bobby stayed at the mic for a bluesy “New Speedway Boogie” that, after some jamming, segued well into “Smokestack Lightning” by blues great Howlin’ Wolf. Next, the band kept things on the blues side with a dash of funk for “Mr. Charlie” sung by Mayer.

Weir then presided over the favorite “Ramble On Rose,” which boasted some more twang from John during the solo section as well as some nice interplay between the guitarist and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti who added a little honky tonk of his own on piano.

Mayer then helmed “They Love Each Other,” which saw Chimenti shining once again, this time on the Hammond organ before the band stretched out a bit on the tune. Bassist Oteil Burbridge then led D&C through “High Time” before Bobby helmed one of his staple numbers, “Let It Grow,” which featured some spicy licks from Mayer and some piano magic from Jeff to wrap up the first frame.

More Skinny

John Mayer led the way on “Sugaree” to launch the second set and had some fiery riffage in store for the solo section before bringing the tune home. The sextet then eased their way into “Truckin’” with Mayer and Chimenti swapping lines before dropping into the American Beauty closer proper.

D&C returned to their blues-funk ways with “Viola Lee Blues” which saw all the vocalists teaming up to sing. The band then offered some improvising on a funky jam with Mayer delivering some more fretboard fireworks and Chimenti hopping on his Clavinet. John then presided over the favorite “Althea” before the band slipped into “The Other One” and exercised some more exploration.

After Bobby sang the first verse ahead of more jamming, “The Other One” gave way to “Drums” and “Space,” with honorary Rhythm Devil Oteil Burbridge joining Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. Mickey then went at it alone to get weird on the Beam before wailing on it to put an exclamation point on his portion of “Space.”

The rest of the band returned to jam their way back into “The Other One” which in turn headed into a Weir-led “Wharf Rat” in the ballad slot. Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light” brought the second set to a close. Dead & Company came back out for a “Casey Jones” encore to bring night one at Folsom to a close. The sextet concludes the Boulder run tonight. A livestream is available via nugs.net.
