Dave Matthews Band brought out Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi during their concert last night in Jacksonville, Florida. Trucks emerged for the tour’s first “Lie In Our Graves” as the penultimate song of DMB’s main set on Tuesday at Daily’s Place and stuck around when his wife, Susan Tedeschi, came out for a set-closing “All Along The Watchtower.”
Last night marked Derek Trucks’ first appearance with Dave Matthews Band and came on the eve of his 43rd birthday. Susan Tedeschi previously performed with the septet during their visit to the Tedeschi Trucks Band leaders’ hometown on May 1, 2019.
Dave Matthews Band kicked off their second of two nights at Daily’s Place with a run of classics “One Sweet World,” “Satellite” and “#41.” The seven-piece then looked to Come Tomorrow for “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” before performing “Madman’s Eyes,” an original debuted in 2021. Later, the group covered Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and offered the tour’s first “Minarets.”
“We have some good friends that don’t live far from here,” Dave Matthews told the crowd towards the end of the main set. “I’d like to invite one of them to come up right now and play this song with us. Thank y’all very much … Mr. Derek Trucks.” With that, Derek took the stage and delivered an intense slide solo during the “Lie In Our Graves” tour debut.
Matthews went on to bring out Tedeschi. “You see our friend Derek is up here, we thought maybe we could ask Susan Tedeschi to come up and play with us too,” Dave said. Susan, who thanked Matthews for welcoming her, dueted with Dave on Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.” Tedeschi also played guitar with both Derek and Susan taking solos during “Watchtower.”
Dave returned to the stage to start the encore with a solo rendition of the traditional “Rye Whiskey.” The rest of the band then came out to close the night with the beloved “Ants Marching.”
