Gorillaz & Thundercat Collaborate On New Single, “Cracker Island” [Listen]

67

Gorillaz released their first new music of 2022 with “Cracker Island”, a new single featuring Thundercat. Thursday’s release marks the animated brainchild of Amon Albarn‘s first release since 2021’s Meanwhile EP featuring Jelani BlackmanAJ Tracey, Barrington Levy, and Alicaì Harley.

“Cracker Island” is a club-ready bop, with Thundercat finding his space between gyration-inducing synthwork. The multi-hyphenated bassist is heard adding his falsetto throughout the song, with a distinct bassline toward the end. Gorillaz co-produced the track alongside Grammy winner Greg Kurstin and Remi Kabaka Jr.

Gorillaz appear to be up to something larger in the studio, as bassist Murdoc attempts to cajole people into “The Last Cult“. Details are scarce, though Murdoc has proclaimed himself the “self-appointed Great Leader” of the new movement.

“It’s nice to be back. I’m well into our new tune, it brings back weird and scary memories of stuff that hasn’t happened yet,” lead vocalist 2D said.
