Punk icon Joan Jett has put SeaWorld on blast for its alleged involvement in animal abuse, particularly their forced breeding.
Jett appeared at SeaWorld’s annual shareholders meeting earlier this week on behalf of PETA, delivering a prepared statement that called SeaWorld out the animal park’s alleged “sexual abuse of dolphins and whales.”
“In the park’s breeding program, unwilling female dolphins are taken from the water and sometimes even drugged so they can’t fight back while SeaWorld staff thrust tubes filled with semen into their uteruses,” Jett stated.
“Some must endure this process repeatedly, only for their babies to die or be taken away and shipped off to other marine prisons.”
Jett continued: “We can all agree that sexually abusing dolphins and whales who must carry out their forced pregnancies is disrespectful to these forms of intelligent life, heedless of these wonderful animals’ rights, and just plain wrong. My question is this: when will SeaWorld end its sordid breeding program?”
Jett has been a longtime animal safety and rights activist, and was involved in levelling a cease and desist order against SeaWorld back in 2013. In her lawsuit, the musician claimed SeaWorld had used her famous track ‘I Love Rock ‘n Roll’ during their Shamu show; reportedly, Jett discovered this after viewing the acclaimed documentary Blackfish.
