Phish Tour 2022: Noblesville Night 1 – Setlist, Recap & The Skinny

72

Phish tour resumed on Friday with the band’s first of three concerts at Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana. The show came on bassist Mike Gordon‘s birthday and heading into the night one of the big questions was how or if Phish would celebrate the occasion. Guitarist Trey Anastasio answered the question by using a few opportunities to honor his bandmate by instrumentally teasing “Happy Birthday To You.”

Originally known as Deer Creek, Ruoff Music Center was an annual stop for Phish between their venue debut on June 19, 1995 and a two-night stand in 2010 outside of years when the band was inactive. The quartet returned to Noblesville for two nights in 2012 and a one-off visit in 2016 before a three-concert visit last summer ended a five-year absence. Friday’s show marked the band’s 27th appearance at the 24,790-capacity shed near Indianapolis.

Phish kicked off their latest visit to Noblesville with “Theme From The Bottom,” the same song that began their first show at the venue in 1995. Friday was just the third “Theme” opener since 1997. A cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” came next and saw Anastasio work “Happy Birthday To You” teases into the intro. Keyboardist Page McConnell played Wurlitzer for the structured part of the song and moved to Clavinet for the jam. While both “Theme” and “Boogie On” were kept concise, Phish stretched out on the ensuing “Everything’s Right.” A blissful improv was encapsulated between dark sections.

Up next was “Esther” just seven shows after its last play, the shortest span between versions for the Junta classic since 2009. Trey struggled with his solo but pulled it together for the “Buried Alive” that followed.
Next up was an “Alaska” featuring an extended piano intro courtesy of McConnell, who had a sticker stating “RIP Dave” in honor of the late Sequential founder Dave Smith on his Prophet synthesizer. Gordon then had a turn in the spotlight for “Mull,” a song he wrote that the band debuted last summer and previously played in Mexico on February 26. Mike threw an “Ah, shit!” into his lyrics. Phish continues to hint at utilizing “Mull” as a jam vehicle with Friday’s version the longest yet thanks to an inspired yet compact improvisation. The quartet went on to end the set by pairing “Birds Of A Feather” and the tour’s first repeat, “Cavern.”

More Skinny

An uneventful “No Men In No Man’s Land” began Friday’s second set and led into the highly-anticipated “Down With Disease” tour debut. Phish covered plenty of ground over the course of the 15-minute “Disease” jam. The main movement was a pretty, bliss-filled excursion followed by a potent arena rock interlude heavy on shredding from Trey. “Down With Disease” faded to near silence when Anastasio started “Joy.” The guitarist shined on the “Ruby Waves” that followed with relentless peaking. Then, the four-piece moved through the beloved Gamehendge classic “The Lizards” and their oldest original, “Fluffhead.” Phish closed out the frame with a high-octane “Chalk Dust Torture.”

Mike Gordon fronted the band on “Contact” to get the encore underway with Anastasio teasing “Happy Birthday To You” once again. Gordon’s ode to automobiles was the band’s first “Contact” since their 2021 visit to Noblesville. Trey then let the fretboard fireworks fly throughout the evening’s “First Tube” finale.

Phish returns to the Ruoff Music Center in Noblesville, Indiana tonight, Saturday, June 4. Purchase a livestream via LivePhish.com or tune in through SiriusXM’s Phish Radio.
