Phoebe Bridgers paid tribute to New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen on Monday during her show in The Boss’s old stomping grounds of Asbury Park. The performance at the Stone Pony Summer Stage featured the singer-songwriter’s debut take on “Stolen Car” from Bruce’s 1980 double LP, The River.

Monday’s cover didn’t come as a complete surprise, as the last time Bridgers visited the Garden State she debuted a cover of “I’m On Fire” while playing at the much smaller Asbury Lanes down the street in 2018. Even though it was her own unique songwriting that brought her to the Summer Stage—located in the parking lot of the Stone Pony, where Springsteen performed in his early days—she still took the time to pay tribute to the hometown hero.

Following a 16-song set that left few stones unturned from her acclaimed 2022 album Punisher and 2017 debut Stranger in the Alp, Bridgers returned to perform a solo encore before the sold-out crowd. “I just screamed my guts out and now I’m gonna sing this,” Bridgers told the sold-out crowd. “So please, be patient with me.”

Phoebe also revealed that she became enamored with “Stolen Car” after hearing Patty Griffin‘s rendition from her third album, 2002’s 1000 Kisses. For her cover, Bridgers brought the haunting frailty that pervades her catalog while also showing the universal quality of Springsteen’s songwriting.

Watch Phoebe Bridgers’ cover of “Stolen Car” by Bruce Springsteen in Asbury Park, NJ. The Phoebe Bridgers Reunion Tour continues with a two-night run at the Prospect Park Bandshell in Brooklyn, NY on June 14th and 15th, followed by a show at Forrest Hill Stadium in Queens, set to feature a “surprise special guest.”
