PREMIERE: Phil Jamieson Emphasises the Hooks on Latest Solo Single ‘Lights On’

Grinspoon leader Phil Jamieson will release his next solo single, ‘Lights On’, on Thursday, 23rd June. We’re premiering it here on Music Feeds. ‘Lights On’ will appear on Jamieson’s upcoming debut solo album, Somebody Else, which is set for release on Friday, 28th July.

‘Lights On’ is the third track lifted from the release, following the title track in March and ‘Trouble’ in May. Jamieson will kick off a headline tour to coincide with the album’s release, joined by band members Davey Lane (You Am I) on guitar, Sam Raines on drums and Rob Muiños on bass.

Phil Jamieson – ‘Lights On’

Jamieson’s music career stretches back to the mid-1990s when he co-founded Grinspoon in Lismore with Pat Davern (guitar), Joe Hansen (bass), and Kristian Hopes (drums). The band rose to national prominence in 1995 after their track ‘Sickfest’ won that year’s triple j Unearthed competition.

Grinspoon have since released seven studio albums, including their 1997 debut, Guide to Better Living, and their most recent effort, 2012’s Black Rabbits. The band’s third album, New Detention, peaked at #2 on the ARIA Albums chart and has gained double platinum accreditation.

Jamieson’s solo career has gradually taken shape over the years. He’s performed intermittent solo acoustic shows and appeared as part of the supergroup The Wrights, teamed up with Chris Cheney, Kram, Tex Perkins and Tim Rogers to pay tribute to the Easybeats, and with Cheney, Rogers and Josh Pyke to pay tribute to The Beatles.

Regarding the new single, ‘Lights On’, Jamieson said, “It’s been a journey for ‘Lights On’, going through many iterations and arrangements and what not. It’s a fun song to move shoulders and hips to and its release also means I’m closer to releasing the album.

“At its core, it’s about always keeping your heart in place for the person that you love. But it’s also about memories that might have betrayed you in some ways, and maybe about stealing money and maybe about hiding it. Maybe it’s about a bank heist, Oceans 13, Oceans 8. And it also could be about saying, ‘No matter what, I’m gonna kind of hang in there, I’m gonna be there.’”
