Red Hot Chili Peppers opened their World Tour 2022 on Saturday at Estadio La Cartuja De Sevilla in Seville, Spain. The first concert of the extensive stadium tour came after a warmup show in April and New Orleans Jazz Fest set on May 1 as well as a handful of promotional appearance.
The band is touring in support of Unlimited Love, a studio album that arrived on April 1. Guitarist John Frusciante, who rejoined the band in 2019, hadn’t toured with the Red Hot Chili Peppers since 2007. Frusciante and bandmates Anthony Kiedis, Chad Smith and Flea will hit Europe, the UK and Ireland before a North American leg that currently spans July 23 through the group’s Austin City Limits Music Festival appearances in October.
Red Hot Chili Peppers worked a brief jam into By The Way single “Can’t Stop” to start the concert and tour on Saturday. Next up was “Black Summer” from Unlimited Love. The quartet also played Unlimited Love cuts “Aquatic Mouth Dance,” “Whatchu Thinkin’,” “Here Ever After” and “These Are The Ways” in Seville.
Saturday’s concert featured a pair of 2022 debuts from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Californication hit “Scar Tissue” was performed early in the band’s main set. The song last saw action in 2019, which was also the last time the group played their 1993 hit “Soul To Squeeze.” Red Hot Chili Peppers dusted off “Soul To Squeeze” as the penultimate tune of their main set in Seville before the beloved “Give It Away” closed out the frame. For the encore, the four-piece treated fans to “Under The Bridge” and “By The Way.” The tour continues tomorrow, Tuesday, June 7 in Barcelona.
