She & Him featuring Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward released their take on The Beach Boys’ “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” The cover appears on the duo’s upcoming studio album, Melt Away: A Tribute To Brian Wilson.
The 14-song collection is due out via Fantasy Records on July 22. The long-awaited follow-up to 2016’s Christmas Party marks She & Him’s seventh studio album. Melt Away continues a relationship between the pair and Wilson that saw Deschanel and Ward contribute to Brian’s No Pier Pressure LP in 2015. Brian Wilson is featured on the Melt Away version of “Do It Again,” a song The Beach Boys initially put out in 1968.
She & Him described the genesis of Melt Away in a press release:
“In the spring of 2020, we started a list of our favorite Brian songs — a very long list. We chose songs without any regard to their chart performance. The obscure ones hit us just as hard as the more popular songs — and all are ripe for re-imagining, re-interpreting, and re-inventing. Brian writes songs of beauty and loneliness and vulnerability better than anyone — and by sequencing them next to popular songs of confidence and love and fun, it creates a more complete picture of life on earth.”
The Beach Boys’ iconic 1966 album Pet Sounds opens with “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.” She & Him’s version is the second track on Melt Away following lead single “Darlin’.” Check out the “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” visualizer below:
