Tedeschi Trucks Band Performs ‘I Am The Moon: I. Crescent’ In Its Entirety In Jacksonville

Tedeschi Trucks Band launched their Wheels Of Soul tour on Friday in Jacksonville with support acts Los Lobos and Gabe Dixon. The 12-piece group offered the live debuts of the five songs featured on their recently released I Am The Moon: I. Crescent within the set at Daily’s Place Amphitheater and were joined by Los Lobos members David Hidalgo and Steve Berlin during the encore.

I Am The Moon: I. Crescent is the first of four new studio albums set for release from Tedeschi Trucks Band in the coming months. Each installment is accompanied by a Alix Lambert-directed film. The band led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks released I Am The Moon: I. Crescent on June 3. Tomorrow, the visual for I Am The Moon: II. Ascension premieres with audio due out this Friday, July 1.

The TTB began their hometown show and the Wheels Of Soul tour with originals “Anyhow” and “Do I Look Worried.” Susan and Derek then fronted the group on “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” Both songs are Derek & The Dominos covers that were originally released on the iconic 1970 album, Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs.

Material on the I Am The Moon albums take lyrical inspiration from “Layla And Manjun,” a poem by Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi that also led Eric Clapton to name the Derek & The Dominos LP Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs. With that in mind, the Tedeschi Trucks Band followed “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” with “Hear My Dear.” The first live performance of the I Am The Moon: I. Crescent opener gave way to the Mike Mattison-fronted “Fall In.”

The premieres kept coming with the project’s title track, “I Am The Moon,” sung by Susan Tedeschi and Gabe Dixon before the swampy “Circles ‘Round The Sun” bled into “Pasaquan.” The latter is the project’s lone instrumental and showcased Derek Trucks. Derek helmed an ensemble featuring Dixon, drummers Tyler Greenwell and Isaac Easy as well as bassist Brandon Boone on the soaring “Pasaquan.” Trucks built his solo into a furious climax aided by Gabe Dixon to end the complete I Am The Moon: I. Crescent section of the evening.

Susan, the horns and the singers returned after “Pasaquan” for “Part Of Me” off 2013’s Made Up Mind. The full ensemble then covered Blind Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues” and looked to their 2011 debut LP Revelator for the euphoric “Bound For Glory” and a powerful “Midnight In Harlem” featuring a bit of “Little Martha” within the intro. Friday’s main set concluded with a take on Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool.”

The Tedeschi Trucks Band emerged for the encore with Hidalgo on guitar and Berlin on sax. Hidalgo and Berlin augmented the 12-piece group on their debut cover of War’s “The World Is A Ghetto.” The horns, including Steve Berlin, then vacated the stage as Mattison led the remaining musicians on the “Get What You Deserve” finale.
