Tedeschi Trucks Band premiered I Am The Moon: Episode I – Crescent, the first in a series of four films accompanying four new studio albums. The five-song Crescent visual debuted last night with a listening experience hosted by bandleaders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. I Am The Moon: I. Crescent, the album, arrives via Fantasy Records this Friday, June 3.
The TTB worked with filmmaker Alix Lambert to create the four films. Up next is I Am The Moon: II. Ascension with the film premiere on June 28 and audio due July 1. Then, the film I Am The Moon: III. The Fall comes out on July 26 ahead of the album release on July 29 before I Am The Moon: IV. Farewell drops on August 23 (film) and August 26 (album). Vinyl configurations, including each of the four albums as well as a 4-LP box set, are slated for release on September 9.
All told, I Am The Moon spans four albums, four films and 24 original songs. Inspired by the mythic Persian tale “Layla And Majnun” penned by Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi, the material was written and recorded collaboratively at the Trucks’ family farm in rural Georgia and Swamp Raga facility in Jacksonville, Florida. Vocalist Mike Mattison came up with the idea to reenvision the poem that inspired Eric Clapton to give his Derek & The Dominos’ album the title Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs.

Tedeschi Trucks Band Details 4-Part New Album ‘I Am The Moon’
“When Mike said, ‘Well, what does Layla think about all this?’, I thought that was an amazing way to look at the story,” Derek Trucks, who produced the project with Bobby Tis handling recording and mixing, said. “It’s amazing because we wrote most of this music in a pretty short time span. There are even chord changes that mirror other tunes – themes and variations, lyrical allusions, that pop back up. You always want to do something bigger and thematic. This is the first time it happened naturally.”
Crescent features five tracks that traverse “life and love through a robust tapestry of blues, funk, country, jazz and gospel: the perfect introduction to the grand saga that Tedeschi Trucks Band have in store over next few months,” as per a press release. Susan shines vocally on opener “Hear My Dear” before Mattison fronts the group on “Fall In.” Crescent continues with keyboardist Gabe Dixon dueting with Tedeschi on the project’s gorgeous title track.
Penultimate track “Circles ‘Round The Sun” is full-tilt TTB filled with swampy goodness and a sturdy groove. Crescent culminates with instrumental “Pasaquan.” The project’s lone instrumental is a tour-de-force for Derek bringing to mind his work on the best Allman Brothers Band versions of “Mountain Jam” from his time in the band and both his “Midnight In Harlem” intros and solos.
