Tyler Childers & The Travelin’ McCourys Team For Grateful Dead Cover & More At DelFest

Tyler Childers joined forces with The Travelin’ McCourys to close out the main stage action at the 2022 DelFest on Sunday. The festival’s host and namesake, Del McCoury, made an appearance during the set at Cumberland, Maryland’s Allegany County Fairgrounds.

Childers delivered a performance backed by The Travelin’ McCourys heavy on originals from throughout his career. Additionally, the ensemble offered a handful of choice covers, including the Bob Weir/Grateful Dead classic “Greatest Story Ever Told” and were joined by Del McCoury for Hank Williams’ “The Old Country Church.” Tyler went solo towards the end of the set for three tunes.

After opening with “House Fire” off Childers’ 2019 LP, Country Squire, Tyler and The Travelin’ McCourys served up “Percheron Mules,” one of a few recently debuted Tyler Childers originals played at DelFest. “Percheron Mules” was followed by “Greatest Story Ever Told,” which Tyler performed with Bob Weir & Wolf Bros at Radio City Music Hall in April.

Del McCoury emerged after “Greatest Story” for the Hank Williams cover. Childers and The Travelin’ McCourys then focused on Tyler originals. As noted, Tyler treated fans to a trio of solo performances later in the set. Childers started the one-man sequence with “Nose On The Grindstone” and then looked to his 2017 album, Purgatory, for “Lady Lay” and ended the solo part of the night with the unreleased song “Follow You To Virgie.” The Travelin’ McCourys returned to help the singer-songwriter close the set and Grandstand Stage with new tune “Rustin’ In The Rain” and a cover of The Charlie Daniels Band’s “Trudy.”
