Blues Traveler was joined by guitarist Cory Wong and pedal steel guitarist Robert Randolph for guest spots during their 4th of July concert at Red Rocks outside Denver last night. The band’s set at their annual Independence Day show at the iconic Morrison, Colorado venue also included an appearance from Wong’s horn section.
Cory Wong and the Robert Randolph Band each played a set to start Monday’s concert. The show took place on the 30th anniversary of Blues Traveler’s initial 4th of July performance at Red Rocks. 1999 and 2020 were the only years the group did not play the venue on Independence Day since 1992.
Blues Traveler kicked off their headlining set by covering The Charlie Daniels Band classic “The Devil Went Down To Georgia.” John Popper and his bandmates then looked to 1993’s Save His Soul for “NY Prophesie” ahead of a take on Sublime’s “What I Got.”
Popper went on to honor the occasion with a solo harmonica “The Star-Spangled Banner” as an introduction to oldie “Slow Change.” The band continued on with Son Seals’ “Funky Bitch” before performing their 1995 hit “Run-Around.” Wong and the horns came out after the pairing of “Regarding Steven” and “But Anyway.” The guitarist and his horn section added to “Mulling It Over.” Cory stuck around for the “Carolina Blues” that followed.
Blues Traveler ended the set sans guests with “Ode From The Aspect” from their 2018 studio album, Hurry Up & Hang Around, a “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” reprise and Four gem “Hook.” Robert Randolph collaborated with the band on the evening’s “The Mountains Win Again” encore.
