Dave Matthews Band stopped by Bethel Woods Center For The Arts in Bethel, New York on Wednesday. DMB welcomed longtime crew member and guitarist Joe Lawlor toward the end of their main set.
Dave Matthews Band got their Bethel concert underway with “Pig” ahead of the group’s cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” The Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King cut “Funny The Way It Is” followed before the band offered “When The World Ends.” A pair of classics in “The Dreaming Tree” and “Crush” came next ahead of the relatively new tune, “Madman’s Eyes,” which debuted last fall.
The rest of the set contained a similar mix of older favorites, new material and a choice cover. Falling in the classic category was a mid-set “Pantala Naga Pampa” > “Rapunzel” along with “Don’t Drink The Water” and “Say Goodbye.” Another 2021 debut, “Walk Around The Moon,” also made an appearance ahead of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.”
After “Say Goodbye,” Dave Matthews and company welcomed guitarist Joe Lawlor. Joe — who travels with the band as their live recording engineer and archivist — recently joined DMB at their June 25 concert in Noblesville, Indiana at the venue formerly known as Deer Creek. The band’s run at The Creek was sans guitarist Tim Reynolds due to COVID-19 and Lawlor helped out on “Rhyme & Reason,” “#41” and “Corn Bread.”
Joe would reprise his role on “Corn Bread” in Bethel. This time around, instead of a drum solo as was the case at Deer Creek, “Corn Bread” was proceeded by Lawlor on a “Star-Spangled Banner” intro on near the site where Jimi Hendrix delivered his iconic version nearly 53 years ago at Woodstock. Joe and Tim also swapped riffs during a fiery 15-minute rendition of “Corn Bread.” Following the Lawlor guest slot, DMB wrapped up the main set with a paring of vintage numbers “Dancing Nancies” and “Warehouse.” Dave went solo to begin the encore with the title track to his sole solo album, 2003’s Some Devil. The classic closer “Ants Marching” capped off the evening.
