Dead & Company returned to Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA on Saturday for an Independence Day weekend celebration. The musical fireworks were put on hold for an hour due to a rain delay, after which the Grateful Dead offshoot performed for nearly two straight hours.
The show began as planned with “Cumberland Blues” followed by “Bertha”. It was at this time that inclement weather forced the band and fans to clear the field and take cover. The rain delay lasted an hour before Bob Weir, Mickey Hart, John Mayer, Oteil Burbridge, Jeff Chimenti, and Jay Lane (filling in once again for Bill Kreutzmann) stormed Gillette field once again like the Patriots they are.

Dead & Company made up for lost time and encouraged the audience to dance themselves dry with a second set-opening “Good Lovin’”. The relative rarity “Crazy Fingers”—played for only the 13th time in the group’s nearly seven year history, per Phantasy Tour–followed. It was then time for the heavy hitters, as the band mined some of the Dead’s most celebrated improvisational springboards with “St. Stephen” into “The Eleven”, ultimately rolling into “Brown-Eyed Women”.

A brief stoppage in play brought up Bobby’s reggae-infused tribute to the Golden Shore, “Estimated Prophet”. This would set up a rolling series of segues that lasted through the rest of the second set, transitioning into “Eyes of the World” before the “Drums” and “Space” segment. Landing back on the natural grass of Gillette Stadium following “Space”, Weir and Mayer traded vocals on Traffic‘s “Dear Mr. Fantasy”, which led into the coda of The Beatles‘ “Hey Jude”—a pairing favored by the Dead in the late 1980’s that has become a second set staple this summer tour since the opener last month in Los Angeles.
Weir finished off the second set with “Morning Dew”, ahead of an encore of Bob Dylan‘s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and the obligatory “One More Saturday Night”.
