Dead & Company Delivers ‘Dark Star’ & More At Star Lake Amphitheatre

37

Dead & Company made the penultimate stop of their Summer Tour 2022 on Tuesday night, performing a show in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania. The concert at Star Lake Amphitheatre featured “Dark Star,” as well as the tour’s first “West L.A. Fadeaway” and “Dear Prudence.”

Dead & Co. drummer Bill Kreutzmann remained on the sidelines while recuperating from a bout of COVID-19 and Jay Lane once again filled in behind his kit. Kreutzmann, who also suffered a back injury while the band was in Boulder, Colorado in June, has been forced to sit out much of the tour but confirmed his intent to rejoin the band when he is at full performance strength.

“The Music Never Stopped” started the first set, landing in the opener slot for the third time this summer. “Dire Wolf” then made its second setlist of the tour as guitarist John Mayer led the band through the Workingman’s Dead favorite. Mayer and fellow guitarist Bob Weir guided a performance of “Friend of the Devil,” a favorite off the Dead’s other 1970 studio album, American Beauty. Next, Weir helmed “Foolish Heart.” The performance was the band’s third attempt at the later-career Dead song that made its D&C debut earlier this tour.

Mayer steered a loping “They Love Each Other,” stretching the Jerry Garcia/Robert Hunter tune out with the assistance of keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. Weir took charge of the first “West L.A. Fadeaway” played by Dead & Company in nearly one year, bringing the In The Dark Garcia/Hunter song out of hibernation with a blues-infused flare. The Go To Heaven couple written by Weir and John Perry Barlow, “Lost Sailor” into “Saint Of Circumstance,” took the band into the evening’s set break.

More Skinny

Set two took off with a Mayer-led rundown of “Big Railroad Blues.” On the eve of the Buck Supermoon, Dead & Company then dug into the psychedelic depths of “Dark Star” taking the celestial free-form vehicle on its typical improvisational journey around Star Lake Amphitheatre. After hitting the first verse of “Dark Star,” the band transitioned into Marty Robbins’ “El Paso,” offering the vintage segue for the first time since the second show of the tour. The western-flavored cover moved into “He’s Gone,” which stirred up another improvised progression.

Bassist Oteil Burbridge prominently contributed to the prevailing “Eyes Of The World,” intertwining melody and rhythm throughout the song’s various sections. The “Eyes” jam pushed along and paved the way for the evening’s “Drums” segment. Captained by drummer Mickey Hart, the rhythmic excursion introduced a wide array of textures and sounds through a steady pulsating beat. Hart capped the adventure with the deep drone of The Beam.

Hours after NASA shared the astounding first images from the James Webb Space Telescope, Dead & Company’s Weir, Mayer, Burbridge and Chimenti entered their own “Space” realm. After several minutes of other-worldly expression, Hart and Lane emerged to join their bandmates, staying in the outer regions as “Dark Star” came back into focus for its second verse. Landing back on firmer ground, Weir’s In The Dark howler “Hell In A Bucket” provided stable footing.

The summer’s first cover of The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” would serve as the second to last song of the set. Closing out the second set was the patriotic romper “U.S. Blues.” The band then called up another American Beauty standout, selecting “Ripple” for the encore that saw Weir and Mayer playing acoustic guitars.
