Dead & Company Delivers ‘Liberty’ & More In Hartford

73

Dead & Company’s Summer Tour 2022 landed in Hartford, Connecticut for a show Tuesday night at the Xfinity Theatre. The setlist included a pair of tour debuts in the first set, as the band played “Liberty” and “Loser” for the first time this year.

Drummer Bill Kreutzmann was once again unable to play the concert and Jay Lane performed in his place. The night began with guitarist Bob Weir’s “The Music Never Stopped.” Next up was “Liberty,” a song written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter and debuted by the Grateful Dead in 1993. Weir sang lead and played slide guitar on Tuesday’s rendition, which was Dead & Company’s eighth performance of “Liberty” and first in 24 shows. Guitarist John Mayer then steered the band through “They Love Each Other,” adding extra emphasis to the lyrics of the slower, grooving arrangement.

“Loser” saw its first setlist appearance of 2022 as Weir helmed the haunting Garcia/Hunter classic. Mayer was tapped to pick up “Alabama Getaway,” leading to Jeff Chimenti showcasing his playing on former Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland’s Hammond B3 organ. Lane and fellow drummer Mickey Hart laid the rhythmic foundation for the subsequent romp through the New Orleans’ flavored “Iko Iko.”

Bassist Oteil Burbridge was then handed the reigns to sing lead on a poignant take on the Workingman’s Dead rarity, “High Time.” The opening half of the show came to a conclusion via Weir’s “Cassidy,” which contained an elongated improvised section featuring Burbridge’s assertive bass work and Mayer and Chimenti’s lively interplay.

More Skinny

The second set was initiated with “Jack Straw,” whose “leaving Texas, fourth day of July” lyrics drew a cheer from the crowd when delivered by Weir. Dead & Co. followed the opener by starting a seamless sequence with “Scarlet Begonias.” Rather than go right into its regular partner “Fire On The Mountain,” the band instead dropped into “Viola Lee Blues,” taking it out on an improvised stretch that eventually landed on the Burbridge-sung “Fire.”

The segues rolled on as Weir’s “The Other One” rumbled out of “Fire.” Making their way through the song’s first verse, “The Other One” jam twisted and turned until it dissolved into the nightly “Drums” jam. Hart and Lane began the rhythmic excursion and were soon joined by Burbridge. The percussive trio went deep into a pulsating groove that led to Hart alone on stage with his drone inducer The Beam, seemingly pulling sounds out of the ether. Burbridge brought his bass out to join The Beam before Hart’s exit and the return of Weir, Mayer and Chimenti for “Space.”

After taking “Space” to its typically out there destination, Dead & Co. contrasted its otherworldliness with the welcoming sounds of “The Wheel.” The band kept covering more ground, moving back to the concluding second verse of “The Other One.” Moving along, Weir shepherded the mournful Workingman’s Dead tune “Black Peter.”

Approaching the venue’s 12 a.m. curfew, Dead & Company transitioned into “Sugar Magnolia.” Weir’s howling “Sunshine Daydream” coda brought an end to the set and due to the curfew, the show. Forgoing an encore, the band ended “Sugar Magnolia” and then gathered at center stage to take a final bow.
