Fundraiser Launched After Hüsker Dü Bassist Diagnosed With Cancer

A fundraising campaign has been launched to aid founding Hüsker Dü bassist Greg Norton following his recent diagnosis with prostate cancer. News of Norton’s diagnosis was first announced on Facebook late last month when his current band UltraBomb revealed they were being forced to cancel a number of upcoming shows.

“I am so sorry to share that I am not able to travel at this time,” Norton explained at the time. “At the beginning of June, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. My doctors at the Mayo Clinic believe I have excellent odds, but we need to get in right away and move forward with treatment and surgery.”

In the aftermath of this news, Norton’s UltraBomb bandmate Jamie Oliver (of UK Subs fame) launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support the bassist during his health battle. Since its launch only a few days ago, the fundraising campaign has exceeded its $30,000 USD goal, currently sitting at just over $50,000 USD at the time of writing.

“We can’t imagine the stress and anxiety he and his family must be going through,” Oliver wrote. “One thing that’s for sure, though, is that the cost of treatment in the United States is eyewatering. We want to help alleviate some of that pressure, so we’ve decided to set up a GoFundMe account to collect money for Greg to put towards his treatment.”

Norton first formed Hüsker Dü in 1979 with drummer Grant Hart and guitarist Bob Mould. During their nine-year existence the group released six critically-acclaimed albums before dissolving in 1988. While Mould would go on to play in Sugar alongside launching a solo career, Hart focused his attention on new band Nova Mobb, while also working on a solo career prior to his death in 2017.
