Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith joined Goose for two covers at Newport Blues Café in Newport, Rhode Island on Friday night. The benefit concert came after Goose made their Newport Folk Festival debut earlier in the day.
Taylor Goldsmith previously sat-in with Goose at the band’s inaugural Fred The Festival at LOCKN’ Farm in Arrington, Virginia on August 21, 2021. Goldsmith emerged towards the middle of the Connecticut-based jam quintet’s “Evening with Goose: Set 2” benefit for Newport Festivals Foundation on Friday. The Los Angeles-based musician played guitar and shared vocal duties on covers of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” and The Band’s version of Motown classic “Don’t Do It” in Newport.

Members of Goose returned the favor on Sunday during Taylor Goldsmith’s solo set at Newport Folk Festival. Rick Mitarotonda played guitar, Peter Anspach handled bass duties and Jeff Arevalo hopped behind the drum kit to back Taylor on “Comes In Waves,” a song featured on the recently released Dawes album, Misadventures Of Doomscroller.

Goose embraced the “folk” aspect of Newport Folk Festival on Friday as Rick and Peter went acoustic at the start of Goose’s set at Fort Adams State Park. The five-piece then paired Dripfield tracks “Borne” and “Hungersite” before offering up “A Western Sun.” From there, the band played “Hot Tea” in a similar style to the version found on Dripfield and ended their Newport Folk Festival debut performance with the beloved “Arcadia.”
Taylor Goldsmith’s guest spot on Friday night at Newport Blues Café followed lengthy renditions of “Drive” and “Arrow” and more straight forward takes on “Silver Rising” and “So Ready.” The first three songs of the night were picked out of a cup that included the titles to many tunes from the group’s catalog as per The Goose Playbook.
Goose followed Taylor’s appearance by performing the recently debuted original “Animal.” The band then treated fans to “726” and ended the night with live staple “Madhuvan.” Additionally, Peter and Rick returned to Fort Adams State Park on Saturday to join Lucius for Shuggie Otis’ “Strawberry Letter 23.” Check out Goose’s tour dates and Newport setlists below:
