Jack Johnson Welcomes Lebo, Fruition Members, Handmade Moments & More In Camden

Jack Johnson has made lemonade out of COVID-19 lemons after members of his band tested positive for the virus. Johnson has continued the tour with the latest stop coming last night in Camden, New Jersey finding the singer-songwriter backed on most of the night by Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) on guitar and Fruition‘s Jeff Leonard on bass and Tyler Thompson. Jack was also joined by Handmade Moments during his concert at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion.

Regular Jack Johnson bassist Merlo Podlewski and keyboardist Zach Gill have been out of action since the singer-songwriter’s headlining set at Levitate Arts & Music Festival on Sunday. Johnson played in various formats, including solo performances and songs with regular drummer Adam Topol and Leonard. Donovan Frankenriter’s bassist Matt Grundy handled the bottom end on a tune while G. Love and Donovan sat-in liberally at Levitate and Mike Love made an appearance with Jack.

The tour continued in Hartford on Monday, where Lebo, Jeff Leonard and Topol served as Johnson’s band. G. Love joined Johnson at various points and Handmade Moments also appeared. Handmade Moments are a duo consisting of Anna Moss and Joel Lunford that joined the tour as support starting in Hartford.

Last night’s concert at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion went on despite Topol testing positive and joining Podlewski and Gill on the sidelines. Lebo, Leonard and Thompson served as the backing band as Jack Johnson got his performance underway. Ironically, the show in Camden had previously been postponed after Jack Johnson tested positive for COVID-19.

The group worked bits of “In The Summertime” (Mungo Jerry) into “Flake,” “Badfish” (Sublime) into “Upside Down” and “Whole Lotta Love” (Led Zeppelin) into “Staple It Together.” The quartet also performed such beloved favorites as “Bubble Toes,” “Banana Pancakes” and “Breakdown.” Lebo played keys at points including on a “Costume Party” Johnson noted was the group’s first time performing. “It’s in the key of F,” Jack advised before the band followed along.

Handmade Moments emerged towards the end of the set for a segment that included original “Calm Down” and a cover of Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels.” From there, Jack Johnson went solo for “Angel,” “Do You Remember” and “Better Together.” Johnson then hopped behind the kit for the evening’s “Who Do You Love?”/”Mudfootball” finale with Thompson on percussion, Moss on sax, Lunford on tuba, Lebo on guitar and Leonard on bass.

Jack Johnson resumes the tour in Cuyahoga, Ohio on Thursday.
