Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy joined Japanese Breakfast for a two-song sit-in at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival. The collaboration took place on Saturday at Chicago’s Union Park.
Tweedy, who currently resides in Chicago and was not otherwise on the P4K Fest lineup, emerged in the middle of a performance of “Kokomo, IN.” The song appeared on Japanese Breakfast’s 2021 album, Jubilee.
“Jeff Tweedy is my favorite songwriter of all time and it’s such an honor,” Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner told the festival audience. “Thank you so much for playing with us.”
“Thank you for having me,” Tweedy replied. “So beautiful, thank you so much. Thank you.”
Tweedy was then given a guitar while Zauner introduced the next song as a “special one.” With Wilco drummer Glenn Kotche among those watching from the side of the stage, the musicians onstage launched into Wilco’s “Jesus Etc.” from 2002’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
