Lake Street Dive returned to a very special sidewalk in Boston for a cover of “Nick of Time” by Bonnie Raitt. The rendition of the title track to the iconic singer-songwriter’s 1989 album serves as the lead single from LSD’s upcoming cover EP, Fun Machine: The Sequel.
The location for the cover holds special significance to Lake Street Dive, as it was where the group recorded the Jackson 5‘s “I Want You Back” in 2012, which made the group a viral sensation. In a bit of added significance, “Nick of Time” is out exactly ten years after the group released “I Want You Back”, on what will be the band’s second collection of covers.
“10 years ago, we set up our instruments on a Boston street corner and played one of our favorite cover songs in front of one microphone, with our buddy [Greg Liszt] behind the camera. Very unexpectedly this simple, unadorned representation of how we make music together ended up resonating with millions of people worldwide and completely changing our lives!!! In celebration of that 10-year anniversary, we decided to go back to that same street corner and play another one of our favorite cover songs, “Nick of Time” by the one and only Bonnie Raitt! Simple, unadorned, straight from the heart!”

For the video, Rachael Price (vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass), Mike Calabrese (drums), Akie Bermiss (keyboards, vocals), and recent addition James Cornelison (guitar) take on a stripped-down approach, as required by the DIY nature of the performance. Lake Street Dive can adapt to most any situation, however, and shines through on the breezy, summertime composition, ably masking the melancholy lyrics about the passage of time.
