Tedeschi Trucks Band welcomed members of Wheels Of Soul tour mates Los Lobos for guest appearances during their headlining sets at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta on Friday and Saturday. Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas, Louie Perez, Steve Berlin and Fredo Ortiz sat-in with the TTB on Friday before Berlin helped the band get their set underway on Saturday.
This year’s Wheels Of Soul tour features Gabe Dixon, Los Lobos and Tedeschi Trucks Band. Friday’s first of two Wheels Of Soul shows at the Fox saw Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks lead their band through all five tracks from their recently released I Am The Moon: I. Crescent album to get the TTB’s Friday night set underway. Tedeschi shined on the soulful “Hear My Dear” and emotion-laden title track, while vocalist Mike Mattison shined on “Fall In” and Derek Trucks let the fretboard fireworks rip on “Pasaquan.” The latter spanned nearly 20 minutes and included a drum solo.
Fredo Ortiz (percussion), David Hidalgo (guitar and vocals), Cesar Rosas (guitar) and Steve Berlin (saxophone) emerged after I Am The Moon: I. Crescent to team with the TTB on War’s “The World Is A Ghetto.” The collaborative cover has been a staple of Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Wheels Of Soul Tour 2022 performances. Louie Perez (guitar) replaced Rosas on the cover of Derek And The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing” that followed. Trucks, Hidalgo and Perez each tore through solos on the gem from Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs.
The Tedeschi Trucks Band went sans guests for the rest of the night on Friday. Susan told the crowd how much fun the tour has been after the guest spots and then fronted the bluesy “So Long Savior,” the lone song from I Am The Moon: II. Ascension performed on Friday. The set rolled on with “Do I Look Worried” and an “Anyday” featuring a “Blue Sky” jam before Mattison helmed “Life Is Crazy.” An expansive “Bound For Glory” starring Gabe Dixon and romp through “That Did It” ended the set. Friday’s encore saw the band work their own “I Want More” into the beloved Allman Brothers Band instrumental “Les Brers In A Minor.”
ABB archivist Kirk West introduced the Tedeschi Trucks Band on Saturday as he had done on Friday. This time around, West strongly urged those sitting to stand up for the band’s performance. Steve Berlin was on hand to augment the TTB on Ascension standout “Playing With My Emotions” to open. A rousing “Made Up Mind” came next after Berlin left the stage. Susan then belted out “Until You Remember” off 2011’s Revelator before Mattison channeled Dr. John for “I Walk On Guilded Splinters.”
Saturday’s set continued with Crescent tracks “Fall In” and “I Am The Moon.” A cover of Derek And The Dominos’ “Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad?” followed before the group returned to Crescent for “Hear My Dear” and “Pasaquan.” The second “Pasaquan” of the weekend was even longer and more adventurous than Friday’s version. Susan introduced the band after “Pasaquan” and sang Ascension standout “La Di Da,” which Tedeschi wrote about her son going to college. Sousaphonist Adrian Jackson bolstered the TTB horns for “La Di Da.”
The Tedeschi Trucks Band focused on classic material to close out the weekend. Derek fit teases of “Little Martha” into his intro for a stellar “Midnight In Harlem” featuring a strong solo that he built from near silence to a powerful peak. Next came the group’s take on Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “I Pity The Fool” and beloved cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” that encapsulated “Sugaree.” A taste of “The Storm” then led into a set-closing version of the Allman Brothers Band classic “Whipping Post.” Saturday’s concert concluded with a “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free” encore.
