Marcus King Grooves Hard, Rocks Harder On New Single, “Blood On The Tracks” [Video]

92

Marcus King shared “Blood on the Tracks”, the fourth single from his upcoming Dan Auerbach-produced solo album Young Blood, on Friday. Like previous singles “Hard Working Man”, “Rescue Me”, and “Lie Lie Lie“, the song comes with a video recorded live at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound featuring bassist Nick Movshon and drummer Chris St. Hilaire alongside King in a power trio format.

In accord with the album’s classic rock aesthetic, “Blood on the Tracks” harkens back to bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival that could rock and groove in the same song, at the same time. The song’s vintage soul comes in part from renowned songwriter Desmond Child, who helped pen hits with Alice Cooper, Joan Jett, and Aerosmith, but far from just a throwback, the track offers a balance of craftful songwriting and raw energy reminiscent of early Black Keys or The White Stripes. King’s guitar playing shines in a virtuosic solo, and his vocal performance takes the song to the next level with Stevie-style soulful cries.

Recounting the process of making the song, King shared, “‘Blood on the Tracks’ was the first song we wrote for the record, it was also my first time meeting Desmond Child. He’s 100% unapologetically himself at all times, and that charmed me immediately. I really enjoyed working with Dan and Desmond on this tune, they both have such an acute sensibility for a ‘hook’ it is scary!” He continued, “The song essentially tells the story of moving forward or being taken down by the trouble you are facing—catching the train or the bloodier alternative. Every writing session for this record started with a conversation, an opportunity for my collaborators to take a peek inside my soul and the pain I was carrying around.”

Young Blood is due out August 27th via Rick Rubin‘s American Records/Republic Records. Watch the live video for “Blood on the Tracks” and click below to view the album tracklist and Marcus King’s upcoming tour dates. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit his website.
