Phish Tour 2022: Bethel Night 1 – Recap, Setlist & The Skinny

69

Phish kicked off a two-night run at Bethel Woods Center For The Arts in Bethel, New York on Friday. The Vermont Quartet played two solid sets and an encore comprised of 22 songs including some great explorations in the first frame, a stellar bonus segment out of the “You Enjoy Myself” vocal jam in the second and more.

Phish got Bethel night one underway with “Golgi Apparatus.” Trey Anastasio danced around on guitar helped along by Jon Fishman’s rolling drum fills to build the section before the final big “ticket stub” drop well. After “Golgi,” the quartet jumped right into “Sample In A Jar.” A driving and yet understated groove would emerge from “Sample” before the band swerved into a minor key jam with keyboardist Page McConnell on his Wurlitzer electric piano and Mike Gordon peeling off some bass licks around an octave note framework.

Trey landed on a descending riff and discovered more motifs that trended in downward trajectories before flipping a switch and heading upwards in happy circles. Page introduced another minor shift on piano and Trey followed suit ahead of a reggae-tinged segment with McConnell on clavinet that quickly swirled the band back into the “Sample” progression with Anastasio reeling off crunchy riffage into the song’s conclusion. At nearly 15 minutes, “Sampe In A Jar” counted as the longest song of the first set and second longest of the show.

The rock ‘n’ roll riff of “My Soul” then rolled over Bethel Woods. The Chairman Of The Boards took a quick piano run after the chorus before Anastasio got into a bluesy ride of his own with Fish egging him on to which Trey obliged. “Gumbo” piped up next. Trey switched to a horn-like effect on the jam as McConnell got cooking on the clav during a low-key funk jam that continued to spiral down into “Saw It Again,” leaving “Gumbo” unfinished.

The brief “Saw It Again” gave way to “Timber (Jerry The Mule).” After the verse and chorus, the band dropped into another low-volume groove with Gordon bubbling on the bass and Page adding some dreamy Wurlitzer accents. Fish sprawled gently all over the kit as Trey began to build and Page switched to piano. The jam dropped again and Fish started doing this swinging rack tom floor tom beat as McConnell switched to his phased-out Fender Rhodes electric piano and on to organ leading Anastasio back into the final lyrics.

Gordo then led the band through “Meat.” Trey had some swampy, bottomed-out riffage in store for the tune as Fish cycled through a number of his go-to samples before Cactus let it rip with some effects-laden licks of his own. Fish hit a series of “awfully rough on the beaver” samples ahead of a syncopated drum solo.

Things then got loungey as Page came out from behind the boards for the tour debut of “Lawn Boy” (no fast one yet) before turning it over to Mike for a bendy bass solo. Trey jumped then right into the intro to “My Friend, My Friend” and lit the fuse on a sinister sheen of effects on the build up ahead of the song’s conclusion. The band then busted out “Guelah Papyrus,” last time played on December 8, 2019 in Charleston. The quartet pulled off the madcap middle section well before heading back into the song complete with Trey and Mike dance. The lovely tune “Brian and Robert” followed, also a tour debut. Next, Phish ramped things back up with Joe Walsh’s “Walk Away.” McConnell led the band through a tight rendition of the rocker before Anastasio delivered some fireworks on the coda with Page mashing on his Moog to put an exclamation point on the first set.

More Skinny

Phish dipped into the Trey Anastasio Band catlog with “Mr. Completely” to launch the second set. McConnell worked the Wurly and piano as Trey hung on the “Mr. Completely” riff but soon began sailing into uncharted waters with light designer Chris Kuroda unfrulong a cool color sail above the band. Anastasio hit some echoes that chased each other around the shed and Mike bobbed along on bass as Page switched to Moog before Trey swerved into “You Enjoy Myself.”

The Vermont Quartet delivered a tightly woven rendition of the favorite, which boasted a cavernous bass bit from Mike, a gleefully sustained note from Trey, Boy, Man, God, Shit and trampoline action ahead of a piping hot solo from Anastasio. Mike also had a scorcher of an over-driven run in store as Trey danced along. The band provided some instrumental accompaniment out of the vocal jam that evolved into a driving groove fueled by Fishman and set alight by Anastasio, fittingly into “Fuego.”

While Phish played the title track to their 2014 album over their rescheduled New Year’s run in April, they rolled out “Fuego” for the first time on the Spring + Summer Tour in Bethel. The jam featured Page on a full Leslie percussion organ tone as Trey kept rolling over booming fills from Fish and bounding bass notes from Mike. The “Fuego” jam then cooled down into “Joy.” Next, Trey chucked it up as Mike bubbled up on Stevie Wonder’s “Boogie On Reggae Woman” which contained a funky groove laced with squishy bass and crunchy clav.

Next, “Scents And Subtle Sounds” floated through Bethel Woods followed by a buoyant jam. Anastasio then dropped the opening chords of “Wilson” which rocked right into “Possum.” Mike led the band through the first verse before McConnell presided over a tasty solo on the eighty-eights and Trey began cooking. Fishman then cascaded the band into “Cavern” which saw Cactus particularly poppy on the bass. The A Picture Of Nectar cut closed the second set. Phish came back out to deliver a single song encore of “A Life Beyond The Dream,” which featured some inspired playing from Trey as well as some great fills form Fish to wrap up the evening. Phish returns to Bethel Woods on Saturday. Livestreams are available via LivePhish.com.
