Phish returned to Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York on Tuesday night for its first stand at the venue since 2013. In keeping with one of the tour’s major themes, the band experimented with their setlist construction to good effect, devoting some of the show’s marquee slots to their newer material, while squeezing the oldies in wherever there was a bit of extra space.
As has also been true all summer, the band played a wide variety of excellent jams out of songs that don’t always feature jams at all. This included two unusually long jams out of songs with unusually long titles: “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan” and “I Never Needed You Like This Before.”
The evening kicked off with a take on “The Curtain” that lacked the “With” appendage, but ran nearly as long as if it were included, thanks to the relaxed pace at which the band played it. The energy picked up with “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” making its earliest appearance in a setlist to date.
On the stage where “Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan” was introduced to the world on June 2, 2009, the song enjoyed perhaps its most interesting version to date. The gorgeous, breezy major key jam reminiscent of the Grateful Dead’s “Bird Song” slid into a quick take on “NICU” during which Page McConnell got to “play it for Jones Beach, Leo!” atop Jon Fishman’s “yeah”s and mooing cows.
An exceptional run through the gentle midsummer swing of “Roggae” followed. Though the song never abandoned its structure entirely, all four musicians pushed just slightly beyond the song’s natural boundaries, uncovering new and quite satisfying ground.
A fairly brief run through “Pebbles and Marbles” was followed by the set’s longest bit of improvisation, out of “Bathtub Gin.” The jam included a slick funk segment, before a return to familiar “Gin” territory, followed by a smoky outro. Out of the “Gin” jam came fiesty, straightforward “Maze.” The spotlight then shone on McConnell for the typically beautiful set-closing “Squirming Coil.”

It’s easy to take for granted how much courage it takes simply to open a second set with a newer song when hits like “Tweezer” are sitting in the on-deck circle just waiting for a crowd to please. But for the second consecutive show, Phish opened set two with a fresher cut. And, like the 23-minute “Wave Of Hope” that wowed Hartford on Sunday, Tuesday’s unprecedented 17-minute monster “I Never Needed You Like This Before” redefined what the song can be. The jam twisted through light and dark, hitting different moods, keys and rhythms before transitioning into the delicate “Leaves.”
Again mirroring Sunday’s show in Hartford, the second set’s second song went for a ride as well. The “Leaves” jam completely flipped the song’s script, earning a spot in the “evil Phish” pantheon, as the quartet went deep on their effects pedals, baking a thousand-layer cake of sound.
Yet another jam vehicle, “Everything’s Right,” followed, and though the band found a cool, funky groove, they found an entryway to “The Mango Song,” and followed it. After a picture-perfect rendition of the tune, McConnell got a turn at the mic on “Most Events Aren’t Planned” — marking four out of five songs from 2017 or later to start the set.
An oldie, “Chalk Dust Torture,” followed, in old-school form, with Trey Anastasio weaving his way up and down his chromatic scales before bringing the song to a crashing finish. Perhaps eager to end the set on a cleaner note, he notched one more tune on the song tally, closing the set with “Julius.”
“Harry Hood” appeared in the encore slot for the 39th time in its 37 years of life, but this version was one-of-a-kind. Settling quickly into a psychedelic blues-rock groove, the jam melted to nothing before it was resurrected, reaching a fiery peak to close the show.
