Texas gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke, and his 11-year-old son, Henry, joined Willie Nelson for “On The Road Again” during the outlaw country musician’s headlining set at the 4th of July Picnic in Austin on Monday. Beto returned to the stage at Q2 Stadium later in the night for “Will The Circle Be Unbroken.”

Beto O’Rourke is running against incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott. O’Rourke’s musical resume includes co-founding the band Foss, a group that counted Cedric Bixler-Zavala (At The Drive-In/Mars Volta) among its members. The 49-year-old politician previously performed with Willie at the 2018 4th of July Picnic, where he shared the stage with Nelson on “Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die” and “It’s All Going To Pot.”

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit, Tyler Childers, Brothers Osborne, Midland, Charley Crockett, Allison Russell, Particle Kid, Steve Earle & the Dukes and Asleep At The Wheel rounded out the lineup for this year’s 4th of July Picnic. The event was first held in 1972 and was presented virtually in 2021.
