Tedeschi Trucks Band returned to Westville Music Bowl on Wednesday as part of the Wheels Of Soul tour. The New Haven, CT concert featured support from Los Lobos and keyboardist Gabe Dixon‘s solo band as well as a full-album performance of TTB’s I Am The Moon: I. Crescent.
Following an opening set from Los Lobos which included covers of Ritchie Valens, Cream, The Crickets, Grateful Dead, and more, Tedeschi Trucks Band took the stage. After tellings of “Signs, High Times” and “Do I Look Worried” came a double dose of Derek and the Dominos with “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”. Derek and the Dominos’ one and only studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, was inspired in part by the 12th-century epic poem Layla and Majnun, which also influenced TTB’s four-album multi-media project I Am The Moon.
Wednesday’s concert witnessed a chronological telling of the first installment of I Am The Moon, Crescent, with “Hear My Dear”, “Fall In”, “I Am The Moon”, and “Circles ‘Round The Sun” into “Pasaquan”. Up next came Susan Tedeschi‘s solo composition, “Just Won’t Burn”, followed by “Part of Me”, Dr. John‘s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters”, and finally Billy Taylor‘s “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” to close out the main set. Returning for the encore, Tedeschi Trucks Band finished the show with “So Long Savior” and a special rendition of “Space Captain” featuring Mitch Chakour, Alecia Chakour‘s father, who used to play with the late Joe Cocker.
