The String Cheese Incident Welcomes Leftover Salmon At Red Rocks

41

The String Cheese Incident continued their three-night Red Rocks run on Saturday. As they did the night previous with openers Yonder Mountain String Band, SCI welcomed fellow Colorado-based jamgrassers Leftover Salmon to close out the first set with a Grateful Dead cover and more.

Cheese got night two at Red Rocks underway with “On The Road.” The band then embarked on a four-song seamless section beginning with multi-instrumentalist Michael Kang’s “These Waves.” The band continued with “Djibouti Bump” ahead of their classic cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody),” a favorite anywhere but especially at Red Rocks. SCI capped off the continuous segment with “Bhangra Saanj.”

Bassist Keith Moseley then led the band through his Cheese classic “Joyful Sound,” which flowed into “Beautiful.” Next, SCI brought out Leftover Salmon. Cheese keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth took a moment to note that LoS and SCI were inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, which is located at Red Rocks, together in 2011. On Friday, fellow 2021 indcutees Yonder Mountain String Band joined SCI for a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.”

Saturday saw Leftover helping out on GD’s “New Speedway Boogie,” sung by Salmon’s Vince Herman. The song boasted some slide guitar stylings from SCI’s Bill Nershi and a smoking solo from Leftover’s Drew Emmitt on guitar capped off by a Red Rock sing-along on the “one way or another” refrain. Emmitt then picked up his mandolin and led everyone through the New Grass Revival-recorded “Reach,” a tune the bands have collaborated on in the past. Check out fan-shot video of the entire sit-in below:

The String Cheese Incident’s second set got underway with the new Kyle song, “Trip The Light Fantastic.” The second frame also contained a pairing “One Step Closer” and “Bollymunster,” the classic “Jellyfish” and a four-song set closing segment beginning with “Land’s End” and heading into the traffic tune “Dear Mr. Fantasy,” which was also covered by the Grateful Dead and performed by Dead & Company at their tour closer last night. The set wrapped with “Rosie” before SCI delivered Bob Marley’s “Could You Be Loved” for the encore to bring the evening to a close.

The String Cheese Incident returns to Red Rocks tonight. The Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh was scheduled to perform with the band but had to cancel after testing positive for COVID-19. SCI shared the news yesterday and noted that the Phil Lesh Incident will be rescheduled and also that they will welcome “a really good friend” for Sunday’s show.
