The Wood Brothers Members Join Greensky Bluegrass At 4848 Festival 2022

Greensky Bluegrass brought the 2022 4848 Festival to a close with a full two-set concert on Saturday night. Oliver Wood and Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers teamed with GSBG for a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Midnight Rider” during the jamgrass quintet’s first set last night.

The 4848 Festival took place at Snowshoe Mountain Resort in Snowshoe, West Virginia from Thursday, July 7 through Saturday, July 9. Greensky Bluegrass’ initial performance of the event was held on Friday night. The five-piece welcomed Leftover Salmon‘s Drew Emmitt, Vince Herman and Andy Thorn for “Freeborn Man” to end their first set on Friday and then were joined by Neighbor guitarist Lyle Brewer on “Give A Shit” and “Kerosene” to conclude the evening. Acrobats on stilts danced while the six musicians performed “Kerosene” as a fireworks display went off above the stage.

GSBG opened last night’s first set with their first cover of Phish’s “Chalk Dust Torture” since November. “I’ll tell you what, we’re psyched to play a bunch of music tonight so we hope you are too,” dobroist Anders Beck told the crowd before an expansive “Last Winter In The Copper Country.” Beck then introduced “Get Sad” off the band’s 2022 album Stress Dreams by explaining “We’re not playing it because we want you to get sad. We’re playing it because it’s a beautiful fucking song.”

“Get Sad” dropped into a “Courage For The Road” the band left unfinished and segued into “Monument.” An aerialist then pulled off impressive moves to accompany GSBG’s “Stress Dreams” performance. “How do we follow that?,” Anders queried the audience. “The answer is The Wood Brothers.” Oliver Wood was on vocals and Jano Rix played melodica for “Midnight Rider,” an ABB song last played by Greensky Bluegrass on January 12, 2019 — a span of 215 shows. Wood and Rix vacated the stage leaving the five-piece to end Saturday’s first set with “Fixin’ To Ruin” and the end of “Courage For The Road.”

Greensky Bluegrass kicked off their final 4848 Festival set with Stress Dreams pairing “Absence Of Reason” and “Grow Together.” A +15-minute “Don’t Lie” came next and displayed the quintet’s improvisational prowess. From there, GSBG offered rarity “Middle Mountain Towns,” Stress Dreams cut “New & Improved” and guitarist Dave Bruzza‘s “Like Reflections” from the band’s 2019 LP, All For Money.

“My instrument is absolutely soaked,” Anders noted adding, “Who’s wet?!” and quipped, “4848, it’s the only festival where you actually know how high you are” to an audience that endured rainstorms. Greensky Bluegrass then played “New Rize Hill.” The band took their time jamming on the instrumental as the stage was filled with dancers in wild costumes, including a gentlemen decked out in a gold outfit with pieces of a disco ball. GSBG covered Sly & The Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” while the dancers showed off their moves and fireworks exploded overhead. Last night’s “Thank You” was the band’s first cover of the song since November 25, 2017 — a gap of 314 concerts.

GSBG delivered an emotional “Past My Prime” encore. Watch video recorded by Rich Stoler for SEPA Live Music Collection containing nearly all of last night’s concert below:
