Phish unveiled pro-shot video featuring the 17-minute take on “Leaves” from Tuesday. The first jammed-out version of the song came early in the second set of the quartet’s concert at Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York.
Guitarist Trey Anastasio co-wrote “Leaves” with lyricist Tom Marshall. Phish debuted the song live on July 14, 2017 in Chicago and included a studio version on 2020’s Sigma Oasis. Tuesday marked the band’s eighth performance of “Leaves” and first in which they painted outside the lines. “Leaves” emerged out of an equally adventurous “I Never Needed You Like This Before.” Read what JamBase contributor Ben Greenfield wrote about the Jones Beach “Leaves” in his recap of the concert:
Again mirroring Sunday’s show in Hartford, the second set’s second song went for a ride as well. The “Leaves” jam completely flipped the song’s script, earning a spot in the “evil Phish” pantheon, as the quartet went deep on their effects pedals, baking a thousand-layer cake of sound.
