The Rolling Stones fit the tour debut of “Sweet Virginia” into their concert at Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam on Thursday. “Sweet Virginia” was played by request as the gem off 1972’s Exile On Main St. won out in fan voting.
Last night’s show was originally scheduled for June 13 but was postponed after Mick Jagger tested positive for COVID-19. Jagger took a moment early in the evening to apologize to fans for the “inconvenience” his bout with COVID caused.
The famed rock band started the latest stop on their 60th Anniversary Tour with “Street Fighting Man” before serving up the trek’s first “Let’s Spend The Night Tonight.” Up next was “Tumbling Dice” followed by the recently debuted “Out Of Time.”
Mick went on to reveal “Sweet Virginia” beat out “Wild Horses,” “Fool To Cry” and “Ruby Tuesday” in fan-fueled voting. Thursday marked the group’s first performance of the song since August 30, 2019 and with Steve Jordan who replaced Charlie Watts after the drummer passed away last summer. Jagger, who asked Jordan to “speed it up a bit,” played harmonica and acoustic guitar on “Sweet Virginia.”
The concert moved on with classic “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” and a performance of 2020 single “Living A Ghost Town.” The newest song of the evening gave way to the tour’s second “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.” After “Honky Tonk Women,” Keith Richards helmed “You Got The Silver” and “Happy.” Mick returned for “Miss You” and an extended “Midnight Rambler” before leading the band through staples “Paint It Black,” “Start Me Up,” “Gimme Shelter” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” to bring the main set to its conclusion. The Rolling Stones said farewell to the Amsterdam crowd with a “Sympathy For The Devil” and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” encore.
