Ehlrich and Kakacek decided they wanted to forge a different musical path than the psych-folk material featured on their 2016 debut Light Upon The Lake and 2019’s Forever Turned Around after writing sessions for what turned out to be Spark began in 2020. Julien traveled to Portland following the end of a lengthy relationship and Max decided to join his best friend and co-writer with the added benefit of avoiding the conclusion of a long Chicago winter. Then, the pandemic hit and the pair spent the next 14 months prepping songs for their third LP with what is described in press materials as “a zeal and determination that recalled their start, before success set expectations.”

“We had time to just sit and watch the body of work grow in real time,” Julien explained. “We were just stacking stronger and stronger songs on top of each other.” The duo decamped to Texas in May 2021 to record Spark with producers Brad Cook and John Congleton. Whitney previously shared the album’s lead single, “Real Love.”

“With ‘Twirl,’ John Congleton and Brad Cook really created the framework for us to explore a new palette,” noted Whitney in a press release. “What started as a simple love song grew into a wider take on human connection that we feel lucky to have made.”

Twirl

“We wrote ‘Blue’ at what I would now call ‘peak isolation’ in the beginning of 2021,” wrote Whitney of the other single released today. “In hindsight it’s clear that we were attempting to manifest a different set of circumstances through the fantasy of love.”
