Widespread Panic kicked off a five-night residency at The Beacon Theatre in New York City on Thursday night. The concert included the band’s first performance of The Beatles’ classic “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” since 2019.

Panic’s run at The Beacon was initially scheduled for September 2022, postponed to January 2022 and finally rescheduled for July 2022. The WSP original “Heroes” was chosen as the first song of the evening. “Rebirtha” followed, transitioning into the first “papa” song of the set, “Papa Johnny Road.” WSP then delivered the typical wrapping of “Goodpeople” around “Dark Bar.”

The second “papa” song of set one, “Papa’s Home” came next. “Shut Up And Drive” then made its second setlist of the year. A pair of Panic staples, “Blue Indian” and “Wondering” filled out the rest of the opening set.

Widespread Panic came out of set break with “Cease Fire” segueing into “Henry Parsons Died,” which was written by Bloodkin’s Daniel Hutchens and Eric Carter. A standalone “Time Zones” set the stage for the band’s first performance of “Happy” in over one year. The instrumental original started a seamless sequence that continued with “Jamais Vu” into a cover of War’s “Four Cornered Room” into a jam containing elements of “Machine Gun” into “Impossible” into “Worry.”

The band then played The Beatles’ “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” for the first time since their acoustic concert on August 23, 2019 at The Ryman Auditorium. Thursday’s unexpected appearance was the fifth time WSP covered The Beatles’ classic, having also played it three times in 2014. “Ain’t Life Grand” trailed the bust out and closed out the second set.

Widespread Panic completed the concert with a two-song encore. Up first was “Down,” which was followed by the Hutchens-written “Makes Sense To Me” for the finale. Widespread Panic’s residency at The Beacon Theatre continues tonight with the second of five nights at the famed New York City venue.
