Widespread Panic delivered the penultimate concert of their five-night Beacon Theatre residency in New York City. The band dusted off their cover of the traditional “One Kind Favor” for the Sunday show.
Frontman John Bell led the band through another cover, Van Morrison’s “Send Your Mind,” to kick off the concert. After “All Time Low,” the band embarked on a three-song seamless sequence beginning with “Bear’s Gone Fishin’” which saw the sextet continuing their trend of teasing Beacon Theatre residency legends The Allman Brothers Band with elements of “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed.” Jimmy Herring teased his former band’s classic “Blue Sky” on Friday.
A well-jammed rendition of J.J. Cale’s “Ride Me High” saw the band including of Gary Numan’s “Cars” leading into “You Got Yours,” which sealed the seamless segment. Classics “Space Wrangler” and “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” followed. Panic capped off the first frame with a pairing of “Protein Drink” and “Sewing Machine.”
The second set kicked off with “Rock” ahead of a pairing of “Party At Your Mama’s House” and “Ribs & Whiskey.” The relatively new tune, “Halloween Face,” debuted fittingly on Halloween 2021, came next before the band delivered Robert Johnson’s “Me And The Devil Blues.”
“Bust It Big then led into a drums segment out of which emerged “One Kind Favor.” The traditional, also known as “See That My Grave’s Kept Clean,” saw early recorded versions by Son House and Blind Lemon Jefferson with Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders, Lou Reed and more covering the song in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Panic debuted the song on July 18, 1997 and last performed it on January 24, 2020, as per Everyday Companion.
After “One Kind Favor,” WSP finished up “Bust It Big” before closing out the second set with Jerry Joseph’s “North.” Widespread Panic returned to the stage to perform Parliament-Funkadelic’s “Red Hot Mama” for the encore. Panic concludes their Beacon Theatre residency tonight.
