Ben Gibbard Performs For KEXP

77

Ben Gibbard performed Live On KEXP. The Washington State native offered solo acoustic takes of songs from Death Cab for Cutie’s upcoming album, Asphalt Medows, and more for the Seattle independent radio station’s performance series.

Asphalt Meadows is due out on September 16. Death Cab For Cutie recently performed on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in support of the album and KEXP host John Richards opened up the session by noting the late night performance. Ben then told a humorous anecdote about being on the show and meeting renowned food studies author Michael Pollan, who wrote a 2018 book about psychedelics, and DCFC’s Dave Depper’s own psychedelic therapy.

Gibbard gets the music going with Asphalt Meadows‘ lead single “Roman Candles.” Ben prefaced the song by saying, “I’ve been referring to this as the Mountain Goats version of this song…it feels like a John Darnielle song when I play it on acoustic.” After “Roman Candles,” the singer-songwriter took it back to Death Cab For Cutie’s 2008 album, Narrow Stairs, with “Cath…”. Gibbard returned to Asphalt Meadows with “Here To Forever” before closing out the session with a cover of Crowded House’s “Something So Strong.”
